“Bolon is an exciting brand that has successfully maintained an ambitious design approach in a highly technical-focused contract business. It inspired me to explore the interaction between the strong structure of the flooring and its tactile woven expression. I wanted the collection to have a soft textile touch balanced with gentle colours. During the collaborative process, we discovered a resemblance between the Bolon weave and traditional Japanese Sashiko stitches. We decided to enhance this aesthetic, creating a warm texture appearance. The result is a hard-wearing commercial flooring with a warm, comfortable softness.”
Patricia Urquiola is one of the most influential designers and architects of our time. Pursuing two professions, she moves freely between the breadth of interior architecture and the detail-focus of product design – a shift that constantly drives her to develop new approaches to her craft. In her collaborative work, the processes of finding the human aspect and exploring craftsmanship often become the very essence of her design. This is the case in the Bolon by Patricia Urquiola collection, as Patricia recognized that the design’s weaving technique resembled traditional Japanese Sashiko stitches.
Sashiko
The Japanese folk art of Sashiko originated in the Edo period. It was a stitching craft used by peasants to reinforce their clothes with heavy threads and patches. Traditionally white thread was used on indigo blue fabric. Over time, the Sashiko technique and expression have evolved to include patterns, simple geometric representations and colour combinations. But the elegance of its simplicity remains.
