In this exclusive interview, we sit down with renowned designer Martino Gamper to discuss his creative journey and collaboration with Bolon UK, for his full retrospective. Martino shares his vision, inspiration, and the story behind Before, After and Beyond, dive into the creative process behind our dynamic rug collaboration and discover what’s next as we continue to push the boundaries of design together.
Why did you choose Bolon as a collaborator for Before After and Beyond?
I wanted each room to have a distinct identity, and Bolon’s flooring inspired me to consider it specifically for the study and library spaces. I was drawn to its functionality, customisability, and vibrant colour options, which allowed me to create spaces that were both practical and visually engaging.
What was the main inspiration behind your rug design for this collaboration?
The idea behind the rug design was to use the studio shapes in a playful and artistic way. I wanted to create an engaging and visually interesting backdrop for my chairs and furniture in the hallway, enhancing the overall space while allowing the furniture pieces to stand out.
The flexibility and versatility of Bolon’s materials encouraged me to push the boundaries of traditional rug design, combining colours and forms in ways that add depth and dimension to the space. This approach allowed me to create a piece that not only complements the surrounding furniture but also serves as a dynamic focal point within the room.

How did Bolon’s material influence your creative choices or approach to the rug design?
Bolon’s unique shapes, diverse collections, and rich colour palette provided an inspiring framework for the design process. These elements allowed me to explore a variety of creative possibilities, using the materials in playful and unexpected ways.
What role does sustainability play in your design process, and how does it align with Bolon’s focus on eco-conscious materials?
My practice is deeply committed to creating well-made, lasting furniture. In this case, Bolon’s eco-conscious approach aligns closely with my vision of designing pieces that are both formally and functionally enduring, making them inherently sustainable.
What were your key objectives with Before, After & Beyond?
With Before, After & Beyond, a central objective was to create a layered and immersive experience, reflecting the philosophy of my studio. My work has always emphasized the intersection of art and functionality, focusing on how furniture can transform spaces in both practical and poetic ways. By “staging” these domestic-style rooms, the exhibition brings to life the intimate environments where furniture becomes part of daily rituals and relationships, moving beyond the conventional, often impersonal gallery display.
My studio believes in curating experiences that reveal the character and versatility of each piece, blending aesthetics with utility in a way that’s grounded in everyday life. This approach allows me to present furniture not just as objects, but as elements that shape how we interact with space. The exhibition provides a holistic view of my design philosophy: that furniture should feel personal, adaptable, and enduring, inviting viewers to imagine each piece as part of their own stories and spaces.
